The Detroit Lions had their first home game of the season against the Seattle Seahawks.
It wound up being a really good game that went to overtime. Unfortunately, the Lions came out on the losing end of this one as they lost 37-31 in overtime. On to the next one.
As always, I have thoughts on this game. These are those thoughts:
Jared Goff
Sadly the streak is over. Jared Goff had the third longest streak of consecutive passes without an interception coming into this game. He made it 379 passes and then the streak ended with a pick six by Tre' Brown in the fourth quarter. You hate to see it end that way.
He finished the day with 323 yards and three touchdowns This was not a bad game for him.
Turns out ski-masks don't affect the sound
You were either pro ski-mask or you were anti ski-mask. The anti ski-maskers had some dumb reasons for not liking them though. One of them was that you couldn't be loud because you're wearing a ski mask as if the mask doesn't have a hole in the area where the sound comes out of your face. Like a ski-mask has a built in ball gag or something. The fans in the building were plenty loud everyone showed out. Regardless of if they were wearing a mask.
Flea Flicker
When done correctly, a flea flicker can be an incredibly deadly play. The Lions did it perfectly on Sunday.
You can actually see the Seahawks defense bite on this so hard that there's pieces of teeth on the field. They all sold out to the run and Kalif Raymond got open with no problems at all. You love to see it.
Maybe we should all be adding Josh Reynolds to our fantasy teams?
He's just so damn quiet that you almost forget he's out there until he makes yet another big play. It's all he does. Reynolds had two of them back to back in the first quarter and one of them was a beautiful touchdown. Reynolds finished the day with 5 receptions for 66 yards and two touchdowns.
Lions tight ends need to work on their blocking
These guys struggled all game long. Every time David Montgomery had a run for a loss or the time that he fumbled, a tight end was missing a block on that play. You just can't have that going forward. The Lions are a team that likes to run the ball. They need their tight ends to assist them in that.
Then again, it's hard to come down on these guys too much when you see a block like LaPorta had here.
The Sun God was Sun Godding
The guy just continues to show why he's one of the best receivers in the game. He went down with an injury in this game, but he managed to put up six catches for 102 yards before that.
Face Mask
I normally try to ignore penalties and not make a big deal of them. They're part of the game. This one was egregious though. Late in the third quarter Geno Smith tossed a pass to DK Metcalf, who was leading Kerby Joseph around his face mask. Somehow he gets called for pass interference when Metcalf dragged him onto him. Metcalf did get called for the face mask, but Joseph shouldn't have been called for pass interference.
Where is the pass rush?
The Seahawks came into this game without both of their starting tackles and even lost their center in the game, yet they were mostly unaffected by the Lions pass rush. They game planned well for it. The Seahawks went up tempo and made sure they got the ball pout fast. Still, you would think there would be slip up somewhere and it just never came.
Wait, I found it
At literally the last minute for the Lions defense, they get a sack and it was huge one. Stop being a pervert. Alex Anzaone sacked Geno Smith on the Seahawks three yard line in a moment where they needed it the most. That set the Lions up a drive that allowed them to tie the game at the end of regulation.
"I'm talking to America here"
The Lions are going to be ok. Relax
This is a good team that the Lions just barely lost to. They fought tooth and nail. The season is far from over. The sky has not fallen and all the platitudes that are appropriate for this moment. Just relax. That's all.
