Monday Overreaction. Aaron Glenn's seat is hot with the Lions
The Detroit Lions lost on Sunday. Naturally, it's time to overreact. I did a lot of these Monday Overreaction pieces in my Pride of Detroit days. This is the first time I'm doing it here and this is the first time that I'm not totally sure this is an overreaction. Here's the thing. The Lions […]
The Lions went into a game against a team that was missing both their starting tackles and then lost their starting center during the game. The Lions got one sack. That's it. I don't know how you do that.
The Seahawks came in, and from the word go, were all over this defense with an up tempo offense that Aaron Glenn and his players just couldn't figure out how to stop.
Look, we knew the Lions were going to lose games this season. A lot of people had the Lions starting 1-1 or even 0-2 and still winning the division and making the playoffs. The Seahawks aren't a bad team by any stretch. They're very good and they'll probably make the playoffs again.
The problem here is that this is the third time that the Seahawks have come in and beaten the hell out of Aaron Glenn's defense. They've allowed 136 points in three games. Is Glenn bad, or does Pete Carroll have his number? I don't know.
What I do know is that this defense looked out of position all day long. Nearly every catch made by a Seahawks player was a wide open one. Anytime a catch was made, you'd see a Lions player like 8 yards away from them. At least that's how it felt. The worst part is that the Seahawks were just doing the same thing nearly every time.

Look at that. The Seahawks just kept going back to the well over and over again and Aaron Glenn just couldn't find a way to push them into it.
That's bad game planning and a pretty good sign that this group was just not well prepared to handle what the Seahawks were going to throw at them.
So here comes the question. Do you fire Aaron Glenn? What would that look like if you did? Who takes over? It's not an easy decison to make and there's not a waiting room somewhere that's full of great defensive coordinators eagerly awaiting your call.
Right now, I have to say the answer is no. The reason being that it is Week 2 and the Lions did just hold Patrick Mahomes to a pretty bad game in Week 1. You also have to take into consideration that while the Lions defense started off really bad last season, they did get pretty good down the stretch. That at least shows that Glenn is capable of making adjustments and getting things under control.
But I will say the seat is warm. This is a good team that's far too good and far too full of talent to continue to have struggles like this. Glenn needs to get this cleaned up or the Lions could be looking for a new defensive coordinator. We've already seen that they are not afraid to move on. Anthony Lynn and Aubrey Pleasant are no longer here. This regime has never been against cutting a guy loose. Even if they like him.
Lions vs Seahawks: What Just Happened?
The Detroit Lions had their first home game of the season against the Seattle Seahawks. It wound up being a really good game that went to overtime. Unfortunately, the Lions came out on the losing end of this one as they lost 37-31 in overtime. On to the next one. As always, I have thoughts […]
