The 49ers had a hole at their fifth cornerback spot in the wake of Samuel Womack III's meniscus injury, that has now been filled by a former mainstay of the Cowboys secondary.

The Niners have signed Anthony Brown to their 53-man roster on a one-year deal after Womack was placed on injured reserve last week.

A sixth-round pick out of Purdue in 2016, Brown played seven seasons with Dallas. His 2022 campaign was ended prematurely by a torn Achilles. He signed with the Steelers practice squad in August but was released by Pittsburgh on September 14.

Brown has predominantly served as a starting outside corner in recent years, however, he does also have experience playing the slot, with that versatility likely a factor in San Francisco's decision to sign him.

The 49ers elevated Tre Swilling from the practice squad for the Week 2 win over the Rams following Womack's injury.

Swilling predictably did not play any defensive snaps in his NFL debut, which saw him limited solely to special teams.

Brown, who has recorded 59 pass breakups and nine interceptions in his career, has a level of experience that should make the 49ers confident they can rely on him if injuries press the former Cowboy into service on defense.
