The Kansas City Chiefs have one of the youngest wide receiver rooms in the league. They also had a young room last season, but this room is a bit different. They have two guys in particular who are first- and second-year players, then a few who don't have much experience.
The oldest guy in the room is Marquez Valdes-Scantling, so you could say he is the veteran or elder of the group. There are going to be a lot of growing pains with the receiver group. We saw that in not only Week 1 but last week and even a bit against the Bears, where the group still had some drops.
Last year, MVS did not have to be that veteran leader who teaches the guys nearly as much as he is this year. He had to do a bit of that on Sunday during the game, where the offense just went off, in front of Taylor Swift, of course.
"They brought a new safety in, and I was like, 'Hey, they're probably going to be in Cover 2, so it's going to be your ball.' He didn't even realize it," MVS said of his convo with Rashee Rice during the game.
"Then, they go Cover 2; he catches the ball, splits the safeties, and almost scores a touchdown. I'm glad I can be in this role to teach him things that I know. The defense is playing lights out, so it was only a matter of time before we figured it out. This is a step in the right direction of what we can do and what we're expecting ourselves to do."
Rashee Rice had a big game and looked like a guy who can eventually be the guy for the Chiefs. For MVS to point out the coverage and be somewhat responsible for the big play we saw, which was nearly a touchdown, is huge, especially for what has been going on with this team.
MVS, who had one catch for 37 yards, didn't have his name called a ton in the 41-10 win over the Chicago Bears, but that's not what it's about for him. We know he will show up when the Chiefs need him, just like he did all postseason en route to a Super Bowl.
Rice, who MVS is obviously mentoring, had five catches for 59 yards and saw the field much more than he has been throughout this year. If he is going to be the guy in the future, he will need all the mentoring he can get.
MVS' role means more than most would think.
