The San Francisco 49ers face a less than ideal situation in Week 7.

San Francisco takes on the Minnesota Vikings on the road on Monday Night Football and will likely do so without All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams, who is listed as doubtful with an ankle injury he suffered in last week's defeat to the Cleveland Browns.

The Niners are expected by most to bounce back from their first loss of the season, but their hopes of doing so are complicated by Williams' potential absence, which leaves San Francisco set to go against a Vikings defense that blitzes on 58 percent of passing downs, per Pro Football Reference — the New England Patriots are second on 43.4 percent — with a pair of tackles that have only 13 starts between them at the position.

Colton McKivitz has stepped in at right tackle and, after a chastening start in which he gave up three sacks to T.J. Watt in the win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, held up well as the successor to Mike McGlinchey, albeit with significant help at times. If Williams, as anticipated, cannot play in Minnesota, the 49ers will turn to swing tackle Jaylon Moore, who has five starts at tackle to his name on both sides of the line.

Moore's last start came in Week 6 last year, the second of two successive starts in place of the injured Williams. He gave up three pressures in each of those games and surrendered one sack across those two appearances.

And head coach Kyle Shanahan believes the veteran rest days Williams gets every week have set Moore up to thrive in his latest opportunity because of the practice time they afford the 2021 fifth-round pick.

Asked about Moore's progress since that last start, Shanahan replied:

“The good thing with Jaylon is he gets a lot of work with us. Trent with his age and stuff, he never really goes on Wednesdays, so Jaylon’s always going with all the reps on Wednesdays. He got a ton of reps in preseason, all the games and everything. So he’s ready for this moment. He’s been with us for a while and if he’s got to step up, which it’s looking that way right now, he’ll be ready. He’s had a good week.”

Despite their high blitz rate, the Vikings are just 15th in pressure rate, while only six teams have registered quarterback knockdowns at a lower rate than Minnesota.

If Moore can hold up against a defense that hasn't delivered the production to match its aggressiveness, the 49ers will be able to feel better about their tackle depth for the second half of the season.
