Christian McCaffrey reportedly made it clear to his head coach early in the week that he would be ready for Monday Night Football.
He made good on those words as the San Francisco 49ers' do-it-all running back was officially listed as active for the Week 7 clash with the Minnesota Vikings despite sustaining an oblique injury in the loss to the Cleveland Browns.
All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams (ankle) and wide receiver Deebo Samuel (shoulder) are both out as expected, with swing tackle Jaylon Moore set to step in for the former. Linebacker Dre Greenlaw will return having missed the defeat to Cleveland with a hamstring injury.
49ers Inactives
QB Brandon Allen
OT Trent Williams
DT Kalia Davis
LB Jalen Graham
RB Tyrion Davis-Price
WR Deebo Samuel
TE Brayden Willis
Inactives observations
There's little to surprise in the 49ers' inactives, given the absences of Samuel and Williams were known well beforehand.
McCaffrey's availability means Davis-Price misses out on an opportunity to make his only his second appearance of the season.
Samuel's injury had left the 49ers with only four active wide receivers before they elevated Chris Conley from the practice squad.
Conley's elevation removed any need to have Willis, the seventh-round tight end who has upside as a route-runner and a threat after the catch, on the gameday roster, allowing them to have all eight healthy offensive linemen up for the game.
Matt Pryor, inactive for the defeat to the Browns, can serve as veteran insurance in case Moore struggles, while Nick Zakelj offers extra interior line depth with starting left guard Aaron Banks having missed a practice last week with an ankle injury.
49ers’ Christian McCaffrey decision could prove to be a season-defining gamble
San Francisco’s tailback will be out there in primetime.
