Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor confirmed that Orlando Brown Jr. (groin) is good to go for Week 8's showdown with the San Francisco 49ers, but rookie Chase Brown pulled his hamstring on Thursday and is now out for this week and potentially longer.
In the grand scheme of things, the starting left tackle is far more important than a reserve running back, but the Bengals were hoping to count on playing Brown more often in the second half of the season. Cincinnati ranks 24th in EPA/rush and 23rd in rush success rate this season.
Without Brown, the Bengals have next-to-nothing in terms of athleticism out of the backfield, and their rotation is limited behind starter Joe Mixon. Trayveon Williams and Chris Evans could now be tasked with larger roles to create a spark in both the run and pass game.
The larger and older Brown at left tackle was limited both Wednesday and Thursday and participated again on Friday. The bye week came at a great time for him to rest, and he will be active on Sunday.
Wide receiver Tee Higgins (rib) and cornerback Chidobe Awuzie (back) can say the same as they practiced fully throughout the week, and look to play without limitations in Santa Clara.
Josh Tupou (toe), Devin Harper (hamstring) were full participants along with Brown Jr. and will be able to suit up Sunday. Linebacker Akeem Davis-Gaither (knee) continues to be out and won't play along with Brown.
