The Lions win was a lot more improbable than initially thought

I'm getting older. That's something that you just have to deal with in life I suppose. I turned 38 last week. I know, it's not that old. That's not the point. The point is that I realized that I've been watching football for most of that 38 years and I've witnessed a lot. But I […]

I'm getting older. That's something that you just have to deal with in life I suppose. I turned 38 last week. I know, it's not that old. That's not the point. The point is that I realized that I've been watching football for most of that 38 years and I've witnessed a lot. But I haven't witnessed a whole lot like what the Detroit Lions did on Sunday. Chances are that you haven't either.

The Lions had a really bad game. They turned the ball over four times. They couldn't stop anyone and they struggled to get their own offense going. For 55 minutes it looked like the Lions were going to lose a trap game. Then outscored the Bears 17-2 in the final four minutes and won the game. How does this happen?

I don't know how outside of saying that the Lions simply kept their composure and got to work. That's easy to say, but it's way harder to actually do. Teams that play like the Lions did for much of Sunday's game just don't win games like that.

Look at that. The Lions were able to win just three times in 26 years. You might remember the last time the Lions did it. I'll give you hint. "Riley!" Back in 2013 when the Lions shocked the Dallas Cowboys when Stafford did the iconic Stafford sneak in the closing seconds.

The improbability goes deeper than that though. I went all the way back to 1985 and looked at all NFL teams. Teams that have turned the ball over four times or more have only won 37 times in the last 38 years. Think about how many NFL games that have been played since then. I mean there's 544 total games in one NFL regular season.

What about Jared Goff? How many times has a Lions quarterback gone out and thrown three interceptions and the Lions still won? For starters, the Lions have had 167 games since 1933 in which their quarterback threw three or more interceptions.

The Lions have won 39 of those games. The last time was the aforementioned 2013 win over the Cowboys. The one before that was in 1994 when Scott Mitchell threw three interceptions and the Lions beat the Giants 28-25 in overtime.

So yeah, this isn't a normal thing. Teams don't just win games like this. I think it's a real testament to the Lions and their belief in what they have going right now that they were able to turn things around and win. This team is just different.

The Lions finally trust Jameson Williams and it shows

It's been a long hard road for Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams. He's had the ACL injury, the gambling suspension, the drops, the hamstring and all the things that fans and media have had to say about him. Through it all the kid just kept smiling and working and doing everything he could to […]
