Brad Holmes' history could point to an offensive weapon for the Lions in the first round
It's really easy to look at the Detroit Lions high powered offense from last season and think that they're all set when it comes to building that unit, but I don't think that's accurate and I don't think the Lions feel that way either. The Lions have a killer run game, a great tight end, […]
It's really easy to look at the Detroit Lions high powered offense from last season and think that they're all set when it comes to building that unit, but I don't think that's accurate and I don't think the Lions feel that way either.
The Lions have a killer run game, a great tight end, a multi-threat guy and maybe the best slot receiver in the league, but they lack a true outside threat or a big bodied X receiver that can make contested catches or be a threat in the red zone. I think the Lions could be looking to find that piece that could be their true number two receiver in 2024 and beyond. Judging from the Lions recent past, they might just go get that in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft.
Brad Holmes has had three drafts for the Lions and he's been unpredictable in every single one of them. The Lions had needs that we all thought would be addressed early in each draft and then the Lions would take a hard right away from them nearly every time.
In 2021 it seemed like the Lions might take a quarterback or receiver early and they went right tackle. In 2022 the Lions needed defensive help and they traded up for Jameson Williams. In 2023 the Lions needed defensive line help and they drafted Jahmyr Gibbs and Sam LaPorta with two of their first three picks. Aidan Hutchinson was really the only pick this team has made that felt like you could call it before hand.
It's not crazy to think that while everyone is looking left at the Lions again this year, they take another right and grab another offensive weapon early. This team is all about getting their guys and not caring about what everyone thinks they should do. It's worked out pretty well so far.
This draft does have receiving talent in it for sure. Guys like Florida State's Keon Coleman, Texas' Adonai Mitchell, LSU's Brian Thomas and Oregon's Troy Franklin could all be there at 29 or in the 20's if the Lions want to move up again.
It might sound crazy that the Lions would do that, but it's pretty evident that we just can't rule out any position at this point. If the team feels good about a guy, they're going to go get him.
7 round mock Detroit Lions mock draft ahead of the combine
The NFL combine starts next Tuesday and usually the combine will be accompanied by changes in draft stock. Players are going to rise and fall after all the running and jumping they do next week. So we're going to get one more mock draft in before that starts and then we'll come back for a […]
