The 2024 NFL Scouting Combine is underway as multiple head coaches and general managers have completed their opening media availability.
Houston Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans is one of those people, and he shared a pretty direct statement on what they are looking to add to their WR room this offseason.
Typically, when you hear coaches and GMs get asked these direct off-season questions, you see them dance around it to avoid giving specific off-season details. Ryans didn't feel the need to do that, it seems, as he gave a very direct answer that he believes they need to add "Separators" to their WR room this offseason.
If separators are what the Texans want to add to their WR room, they are in luck because this draft class has some great options for them to consider.
Ladd McConkey, Georgia

Georgia’s Ladd McConkey is one of the top players in this draft class that the Texans should be looking at to fill this role. McConkey is one of the best route runners in this class and uses it to create a ton of separation on tape. He displayed this at the 2024 Senior Bowl, where he looked uncoverable for most of the week.
From what I've heard around the league, if the Texans would want McConkey, it would probably have to be with their first-round pick at 23 or an aggressive trade-up from their second-round pick at 59. The draft range I've been given on McConkey is that he will likely hear his name called anywhere from the 20s in the first round to the early part of the second round.
Xavier Worthy, Texas

Another option for the Texans is Texas’ WR Xavier Worthy. Worthy is one of the more exciting WR prospects in this draft class, thanks to his speed. He, without a doubt, would check Ryan’s box of being a separator and would even offer more YAC potential than the other WRs listed in this article.
Like McConkey, I think the Texans would have to use their first-round pick on Worthy or an aggressive trade-up from their second-round pick. His draft range also seems to be from the 20's in the first round to the early part of the second.
Roman Wilson, Michigan

Another player who had a big week at the Senior Bowl was Michigan WR Roman Wilson. Wilson’s first two days were so impressive he didn’t even suit up for the final day of practice. He dominated one-on-ones and team drills with his route running. It felt like the guy was always wide open.
The perk with Wilson is it would allow the Texans to go elsewhere with their first-round pick. Wilson's current draft range seems to be anywhere from the middle of the second round to the middle third.
Ricky Pearsall, Florida

The third Senior Bowl participant on this list comes in Florida WR Richy Pearsall. Pearsall was impressive at the Senior Bowl, where his skill set was fully displayed. He is a very intelligent WR who can find the holes in one defense at a high level. This could be a significant asset for Ryan’s desire to find a player to excel on these downs.
Like Wilson, the Texans wouldn't have to use their first-round pick on Pearsall. I expect him to hear his name called anytime from the late second to the late third round. Pearsall also has solid size to allow him to play in the slot or the outside, allowing the Texans to get creative with deploying rookie star Tank Dell.
