Typically, the NFL Combine is used as insurance.
Teams already have all these players graded, and know them quite well at this point via their scouting staffs.
But occasionally, and especially when you set an NFL record, you can leave the NFL Combine with a soaring draft stock, something Texas WR Xavier Worthy just did:

Now this was special for a few reasons, the most obvious of which is that Worthy's official time of 4.21 seconds stands alone atop the history books.
But Worthy ran 4.25 on his first run, which alone may have boosted his draft stock.
So to give it another go, and best the first time is rare, and Worthy did just that with a 4.22, tying John Ross for the fastest time ever.
And then came the wait for the official times, which would prove to be .01 seconds faster, giving Worthy the record.
And that is certainly going to help Worthy who was seen as the 44th overall player on the consensus big board heading into the Combine, leaving him within striking range of the Steelers in round two.
But right or wrong given his other flaws as a prospect, it only takes one team desperate for speed to take Worthy in round one, and high at that, all but ending his chance at becoming a Steeler before it really started.
