Welcome to free agency. the fun starts today and you will have your socks blown off by news every single minute of every single day this week. One of the biggest news stories so far is that Bengals star receiver Teed Higgins, who the Bengals used the franchise tag on, has requested the Bengals trade him. The Ringer's Ben Solak suggests the Lions get on the phone and offer a big asset for him.

That's a lot, but Solak is not wrong in the sense that the Lions should be interested. We've already talked a lot about the Lions very real interest in a receiver this offseason and how they could be looking to take one as high as the first round. The opportunity to bring in Higgins is a "sure thing" kind of move that immediately gives the Lions their number two receiver.

It also gives the Lions the big bodied X receiver that they have been needing for a while now. It's at this point that you have to play the game of "can the Lions get anyone better than Higgins at 29?" I think the clear answer is no. This is an immediate impact player that makes one of the hottest offenses in the NFL even hotter.

The problem is with the first round pick. Is that too much? Not really. A lot of receivers have been moved for first round picks in recent years. D.J. Moore, A.J. Brown, Marquise Brown, Tyreek Hill, Davante Adams and Stefon Diggs were all involved in trades where the team trading them got a first round pick back.

Do I think the Lions should do it? I do. This is a chance to put yourself over the top on offense. The Lions do need some defensive weapons and they can still get that. This move doesn't prevent them from doing that. They can still shoot for a high end corner and defensive line depth. Then there's the rest of the draft where the Lions have drafted quite well and the class is deep in pass rushers.

The other thing of note is that the Lions are at pick 29. That's nearly second round as it is and Brad Holmes has already teased trading out of the first round on multiple occasions. Here is the opportunity to do that and upgrade at a needed position with a player that we know can play.

As for projected contract amount, the tag amount for this season is $21.8 million. As for a full on contract, our on staff cap analysts projected Higgins would get a three year deal worth $70,5 million. He would get an annual per year amount of $23.5 million and $45 million guaranteed. It's a lot, but again, this is big spot for the Lions and secures their offense for the foreseeable future.

Detroit Lions re-sign Graham Glasgow to three year deal

The Detroit Lions are bringing back a major piece of their offensive line with this move. I'm not sure there was ever any doubt. The Lions have re-signed starting right guard Graham Glasgow.  Glasgow returned to Detroit in 2023 after a rough ending with the Broncos and completely resurrected his career. He became the starter […]
