The Detroit Lions made some noise in free agency with the signings of DJ Reader, Kevin Zeitler, Amik Robertson and Marcus Davenport. The trade for Carlton Davis was big too. The Lions came into free agency with a solid amount of money and they've spent a good amount of it too. Right now they're left with $26,614,808 to spend. but will they make anymore noise? There's a good chance they won't.
Nothing is set in stone. The Lions may still work in a signing or two ahead of the draft. But here's why they might not do anything that would be considered a splash.
Some of that money is accounted for already
It looks like the Lions have a lot of money left to spend, but some of that has to be set aside for other things. They'll need about $3 million of that to sign their draft picks and then teams usually save about $10 million for transactions they plan to do during the season. That leaves the Lions with $13,614,808 left to spend.
Rollover
We mentioned this in the past and others have brought it up too. The Lions may have interest in rolling over money into next year. Detroit has other moves to make when it comes to extensions and new contracts next year. Rolling over money helps them do that. Teams are beginning to do it more and more. Last year the 49ers rolled over $38 million. They're going to be glad they did when they're able to keep their team together.
What could be done to free up cash?
The Lions have options to free up cap space. They can restructure contracts for starters. Both Taylor Decker and Frank Ragnow's deal could be restructured and that would free up nearly $12 million in this years cap. The Lions could also free up some cash when they get the Jared Goff extension done. We estimated that the Lions could save just over $13 million by tweaking his 2024 cap hit. Per Dan Campbell at the league meetings, that extension, along with Amon-Ra St. Brown's, is an organizational priority.
