For the second week in a row, the Green Bay Packers have elevated quarterback Sean Clifford for gameday from the practice squad. Last week, he served as the backup for Malik Willis while Jordan Love couldn't play against the Indianapolis Colts because of his MCL sprain. The news was first reported by Bill Huber.

Even though the new elevation is not the best sign for Love's availability on Sunday versus the Tennessee Titans, the outcome can be different this time around. Unlike last week, Jordan Love practiced three times ahead of the Titans game, so his chances of being active are higher.

The move of elevating Clifford for gameday gives the Packers flexibility, because he can be active, but it doesn't necessarily mean Love won't play. Green Bay has to decide its 48 active players 90 minutes before the game, and they can still list Clifford as inactive — he would still receive his weekly salary as a member of the 53-man roster, but that's worth it in this situation.

Elevations

Besides Sean Clifford, the Packers have also elevated cornerback Robert Rochell for gameday, since Carrington Valentine is doubtful to play with an ankle injury.

Every season, any player can be elevated from the practice squad for gameday three times by the same team. This is the second elevation for Clifford, who was not called up in week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

That means Clifford still has one elevation available for the Packers. After that, Green Bay would have to promote him to the 53-man roster if necessary throughout the regular season.

Confidence

The Packers selected Sean Clifford in the fifth round of last year's draft and he spent his entire rookie season on the active roster as Jordan Love's immediate backup. However, the situation changed this year.

Green Bay drafted Michael Pratt in the seventh round, and they both competed for the backup job. With a poor performance in training camp and preseason, the two players ended up being waived in final roster cuts, after Green Bay acquired Malik Willis from the Tennessee Titans.

The staff decided that Sean Clifford was better suited to be the QB3, bringing him back to the practice squad, while Pratt was allowed to leave and signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' PS.

With Love out of practice last week, Sean Clifford got some reps with the ones ahead of the Colts game, but he didn't need to play. This week, Love and Willis centralized the reps with starters.
