When freshmen at Ohio State make an impact on the football field right away most of the time it comes on special teams. Very rare is there a special freshman that can come in and be the kind of player that Jeremiah Smith was in 2024 for the Buckeyes. Smith more than backed up his No. 1 overall recruit tag with a stellar freshman season.
Ohio State doesn’t have another smith on the offense side of the ball as a freshman in 2025. However, there is an elite defender on campus who is expected to make an impact from Day 1.
Devin Sanchez was the No. 1 cornerback in the class of 2025 and the No. 8 overall player, according to 247 Sports Composite. Sanchez was an early enrollee and pea order with the Buckeyes during the College Football Playoff. The talented newcomer has already made a transformation of sorts.
Sanchez recently took to his Instagram story to share that he has gone from 179 pounds to 196 pounds in two months. Gaining 17 pounds already is a great sign for Sanchez adjusting to the strength training at the college level. The talented freshman putting on weight and already being the prototypical size for a corner at 6-foot-2 and 196 pounds is terrific.
With Denzel Burke and Jordan Hancock off to the NFL, the Buckeyes will have two cornerbacks sliding up the depth chart. Jermaine Mathews Jr. is expected to slide in alongside Davison Igbinosun. Sanchez is going to compete with sophomores Aaron Scott and Bryce West for that third cornerback spot for Ohio State.
Outside QB Tavien St. Clair, Sanchez is the highest-profile recruit that the Buckeyes brought in for 2025. Early return is that the Texas native is adjusting to Columbus seamlessly.
Ohio State Buckeyes aren’t giving up on handing the Texas Longhorns a major loss off of the gridiron
The Buckeyes are still in pursuit.
