Tampa Bay Buccaneers reserve tackle Garret Greenfield has retired from football, the team announced Thursday morning. He entered the NFL in 2024 as an undrafted free agent out of West Virginia and began his career with the Seattle Seahawks before joining the Bucs back in January.
It's unclear why Greenfield retired and currently, no corresponding move has been announced.
The Bucs had 91 rostered players before Greenfield's retirement, which now brings them to 90. They can still add one more player to the roster, however, because offensive lineman Lorenz Metz is an International Pathway Player and doesn't count against the 90-man limit.
The Bucs are now even slimmer at the tackle position after Greenfield's decision, with only Charlie Heck, undrafted rookie Ben Chukwuma, and the aforementioned Metz as the only healthy/available tackles.
That should get fixed in the long term, however, and it's easy to see why.
Greenfield's retirement can help aid the Tristan Wirfs injury situation
This is key because the Bucs are clearly looking for a veteran offensive tackle to come in and provide depth while Tristan Wirfs recovers from offseason knee surgery.
The Bucs worked out veterans George Fant on Tuesday and Chris Hubbard on Wednesday. If they liked what they saw from either one and are able to agree to terms, the Bucs can now sign one of them to the roster without the necessity of releasing another player.
"We've been looking and we've been bringing guys in," Todd Bowles told reporters after practice. "We hadn't settled on one yet, but we know from a depth standpoint, we have to get some people in here pretty soon and we're trying to make one of those signings."
In other words: The Bucs just need to find their guy and they'll be able to breathe just a little bit easier as they await Wirfs' return to action.
