Alabama keeping elite five-star defender will pay off in a major way down the road as Tide continue to press for national titles under Kalen DeBoer
One of Alabama’s five-star commitments for 2026 shut down his recruitment on Thursday night.
Alabama's defense under Kane Wommack values versatility. It doesn't really matter at what level of the defense either, as the defensive front, off-ball linebackers and secondary all feature multiple guys who can handle a lot of different roles on Saturday.
Last year, Jihaad Campbell was a perfect example of that how versatility can be deployed. He was primarily Alabama's starting Mike linebacker who spent a majority of his 781 defensive snaps off the ball, but he also played close to 15% of his snaps as an on-ball edge rusher in certain packages or situations.
That versatility was huge, as Campbell's sideline-to-sideline range as a second-level defender was useful, but his ability to get after the quarterback in passing situations added another element. Plus, Alabama had a third starting-caliber linebacker in Justin Jefferson who was able to play next to Deontae Lawson off the ball when Campbell would slide to the Wolf position.
Unfortunately, that versatility was lost when the Tide lost Lawson to a season-ending knee injury against Oklahoma. That forced Campbell and Jefferson onto the field together as the Mike and Stinger (or the weakside linebacker), so Campbell was unable to get edge snaps for the last 2.5 games of Alabama's season.
Now, he's playing for the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFL and Alabama is in need of another versatile second-level piece for the future. Fortunately for the Crimson Tide, they've found one of the more intriguing long-term replacement options for Campbell in five-star Xavier Griffin, who committed last month.
Like Campbell, Griffin is a long, rangy off-ball linebacker who brings sideline-to-sideline speed and rare ability as an edge rusher. That Micah Parsons-type of versatility isn't all that common, which is why this was such an important get for Wommack and company. The commitment was critical after Griffin was originally pledged to USC, and now Bama fans no longer have to worry about another possible decommitment.
On Thursday night, the Gainesville (Ga.) standout shut down his recruitment via a post on social media. The caption on X was simple, as it read, "100% locked in" while showing a picture of Griffin in an Alabama jacket holding a national championship trophy.
Alabama has Bandit ends who can play on the interior of the defensive line. It has safeties who can play Husky and maybe even some perimeter corner. It's got edge guys who can play either the Wolf or the Bandit. And now it's added another versatile second-level defender who can play on or off the ball at an extremely high level.
The recruiting in Tuscaloosa continues to position this program for national title runs.
