There's, finally, a new face to the Miami Dolphins cornerback room. After much dissent about the composition of Miami's cornerback situation, the Dolphins have agreed to terms to add a veteran player to the room. ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting that the Dolphins have agreed to sign cornerback Jack Jones on a one-year contract for the 2025 season.

Jones most recently played with the Raiders but was cut in the spring amid a regime change in Las Vegas. He does have something of a checkered past, which has likely contributed to what has been a limited market before signing in Miami.

The Dolphins are particularly familiar with Jones, as he got his NFL career started with the New England Patriots. Jones, a fourth-round draft choice for the Patriots in 2022, has made plenty of splash plays, he's a twitchy corner with quick feet and plus ball skills — he has seven career interceptions and posted three of them in 2024 while serving as a 16 game starter for the Raiders.

Jones isn't the biggest corner but he does play a scrappy brand of football and, if not for some off the field run-ins, he'd likely be considered a long-term starter for either the Patriots or the Raiders. But Jones wore out his welcome with both teams in short order, meaning Miami's signing as a one-year opportunity will serve as a springboard opportunity for Jones to be the best version of himself and get re-aligned to potentially secure the life-changing contract his physical skills suggest he's capable of.

For the Dolphins, it's a much-needed shot in the arm with some new talent at the position. The risks are apparent but the Dolphins are presumably welcome to the potential rewards outweighing any downside. At this stage of the offseason and with Jones on a one-year deal, they're probably right.
