Until Tuesday, it was unclear if sophomore defensive back Boo Carter was going to be on the Tennessee Vols' roster this fall.
Vols head coach Josh Heupel announced Tuesday that Carter, amid reports that he missed numerous team activities over the summer, will remain on Tennessee's roster.
According to Heupel, Carter has "some things" he has to do before returning to the field for the Vols.
Before the reports about Carter's "unplugged summer" surfaced, there was plenty of excitement about the Chattanooga native's potential role on offense in 2025.
Carter, who played safety for Tennessee as a true freshman, was expected to see some action at wide receiver this fall.
"When you do that (play both ways), there’s a whole 'nother workload that you gotta take on," said Heupel of Carter in the spring. "Because you’ve got to understand what’s going on on both sides of the football. He’s done a really good job. He’s spent a lot extra time in here, learning what we’re doing offensively [and] being able to handle the structure of the offense.
"We’re intentional in what positions we’re putting him in during the course of practice, today during the scrimmage, and trying to manage that side of it. He’s worked hard. You can look at him as a punt returner to see the skill set, when he has the ball in his hands, that he’s got a chance to be a dynamic playmaker.”
On Tuesday, Heupel was asked if Carter will still see time on offense in 2025.
Heupel, unsurprisingly, was non-committal about Carter's potential role in UT's offense.
"We're going to take it slow here in the beginning, and we'll figure out where we're at as we get deeper into camp," said Heupel.
Carter is one of the most dynamic players in the SEC — he's extremely dangerous with the ball in his hands. And considering the Vols' lack of experience at wide receiver, he's a player that could be considered important for Tennessee on the offensive side of the ball.
But it sounds like the offensive aspect of what Carter can bring to the team is taking a backseat — at least for now.
I would bet that Carter will probably see some action on offense in 2025 — he's too talented to not get the ball in his hands as often as possible.
But he'll need to take care of his off-the-field issues before worrying about playing offense.
There's a big positive coming out of the Boo Carter situation that Tennessee Vols fans should be fired up about
Tennessee Vols fans almost escaped the summer without any drama. Almost. News broke last week that sophomore defensive back Boo Carter, a former four-star recruit who is one of the Vols' most talented players, has missed some team activities this summer. As a result, his spot on the team is in jeopardy. Carter is expected […]
