49ers add two skill players as camp grind sets in — and one longshot could force his way onto the roster if things fall into place
The San Francisco 49ers added some reinforcements to their skill group for training camp. Can either name stick?
The San Francisco 49ers are collecting some reinforcements for their skill positions as the dog days of summer push onward. San Francisco has dealt with a number of injuries to the playmakers — leaving the need for some more bodies to disperse the wear and tear of high-volume practice reps. The big question for San Francisco is whether or not any new faces added into the mix will seize the opportunity and stick around.
San Francisco’s new names are, at the very least, experienced. According to a report from Jordan Schultz, the 49ers have added both a running back and a wide receiver.
49ers agree to terms with RB Ameer Abdullah, WR Andy Isabella
Both of the team’s new additions, running back Ameer Abdullah and wide receiver Andy Isabella, partook in workouts with the team yesterday per the NFL’s official transaction wire.
Adbullah is a long-time veteran who entered the NFL as a second-round draft choice in 2015. He’s most recently logged time with the Raiders and posted 311 rushing yards last season in his age 31 season. That rushing mark was the highest yardage Abdullah had produced since 2017 in Detroit. Isabella was also a second-round draft choice when he entered the league, he was drafted 62nd overall by the Arizona Cardinals in 2019. He has just six targets and two punt returns since the beginning of the 2021 NFL season.
Based on the recent resumes, it is probably safe to say Isabella is a placeholder amid some injury issues at wide receiver. The likelihood that he catches lightning in a bottle and sticks on the roster feels like the ultimate long shot. Abdullah, however, could potentially stick around if the running back room catches an injury or the numbers shake out right. Abdullah played good football on a bad offense in 2024, averaging 4.7 yards per attempt on the ground for the Raiders.
That will now be up to Abdullah. But the hard part appears to be over — he’s landed on a roster. And amid the turnover in the backfield with the departures of Jordan Mason and Elijah Mitchell, Abdullah’s experience could be a valued asset when the chips are down.
