Tennessee Vols true freshman wide receiver Travis Smith Jr has a truly insane goal for the 2025 college football season.
And the confidence he has in himself as a player might give him a chance to accomplish that goal.
Smith said earlier this year that his goal for 2025 is to start for the Volunteers and go over 1,000 receiving yards while recording 10 touchdown receptions.
“Contested catches, all the way,” said Smith when asked what he can add to Tennessee’s offense. “It’s a 90/10 ball with me. Just going deep, catching everything, and then just making plays.”
“A/B honor roll, being on time everywhere,” continued Smith when asked about his goals for the 2025 season. “On the field, I definitely want to start. I want to set the bar high. I’m going to say over 1,000 yards and 10 [touchdowns]. I don’t care about receptions, just throw it up. On the field, I’d say those are my goals, for real. Over 1,000 yards, 10 [touchdowns], and starting.”
Smith, a former four-star recruit from Atlanta, already looks like a seasoned SEC wide receiver at 6-foot-3/210 lbs.
1,000 receiving yards and 10 receiving touchdowns as a true freshman is certainly a lofty goal (as good as Alabama’s Ryan Williams was last season, he fell short of both of those benchmarks, though Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith easily cleared both in 2024). Smith, however, has the size and speed to make an instant impact in the SEC. And he might have an opportunity, too — thanks in part to the Vols’ thin depth at wide receiver (which is even thinner now with starter Chris Brazzell sidelined to start fall camp and Boo Carter’s potential role on offense up in the air).
“Seeing those guys last year (true freshmen wide receivers like Jeremiah Smith and Ryan Williams) do their thing as freshmen, that definitely motivates you,” said Smith on Thursday after Tennessee’s second fall practice. “And it makes you want to make an impact really early.”
We’ll see what kind of impact Smith makes when he takes the field for the Vols this fall. He’s definitely a player that Tennessee fans should be excited about as he has the potential to be one of the top receivers in the conference at some point in his college career.
