The worst-case scenario for the Washington Commanders has officially happened as All-Pro WR Terry McLaurin has requested a trade from the team.
The contract standoff has gone downhill quickly since McLaurin publicly spoke about his dissatisfaction with the front office and lack of communication on a new contract, but this is a new low in the saga.
McLaurin has officially requested a trade
Multiple reports for weeks now have suggested that the Commanders and McLaurin are “not close” on a deal, and Adam Schefter has gone so far as to say that there’s a huge gap to fill on the numbers. There’s no proof of the exact numbers each side is asking for, but none of the reports have been positive one bit.
McLaurin has done everything possible on his side by publicly speaking out against the team, then holding out of training camp, and then recently reported to practice even though he isn’t officially with the team yet. He has laid out all of the cards in his hand, and now he has to go all-in and be aggressive by requesting a trade. This was the next power move to be made.
The fan-favorite WR wants to be in Washington, but he also wants to get paid what he believes he deserves for what is likely his last major contract of his career. There are no other moves to be made by McLaurin and his agent other than requesting a trade and applying more pressure to the Commanders’ front office.
What happens next?
There have been multiple reports that teams have inquired about trading for the All-Pro WR McLaurin, but Washington has had no interest in doing so. I don’t see that changing. Peters knows how valuable McLaurin is to the offense and the fan base, and trading McLaurin can set back all of the work you’ve done this offseason to build a Super Bowl roster.
Players like Lamar Jackson, Myles Garrett, and Tee Higgins all requested a trade, and all three were paid handsomely. This is nothing more than a contract tactic to increase the pressure to get a deal done. The issue now is that somebody needs to give in on their number and get closer to a realistic deal for something to get done.
McLaurin officially requesting a trade was a move that was expected to happen at the rate that contract negotiations were moving, and should change nothing except for the speed at how fast this can get done. The Commanders could also play hardball and make him play his final year out. All eyes are now on Adam Peters and the Commanders to figure this out.
