The NFL is officially back. Hype, opinions, and stats are gonna fly around like no tomorrow. For the Los Angeles Chargers, some players made a case for themselves on why they should be in the mix to make the Week 1 roster for Jim Harbaugh’s squad.

Trey Lance impresses the NFL world

This one is a no-brainer. Lance looked like a legitimate NFL starting quarterback in this game against Detroit. He looked mobile, decisive, and took advantage of nearly every opportunity to make a positive play for himself and his offense. The comfort in his game stood out in a major way.

Lance is competing with Taylor Heinicke for the backup QB job behind Justin Herbert. With performances like this one, Lance will earn that position for LA. Let’s see if he can build on it.

Nikko Reed leaps onto scene as rookie

The undrafted free agent quite legitimate jumped into the limelight when he jumped a route for an interception against the Lions’ Kyle Allen. Jim Harbaugh even gave Reed a halftime shoutout during the game. Clearly, his performances in practice and this preseason contest have made an impression on the staff for the Chargers.

“Especially if you’re undrafted, it’s like how do you get people in the building, organization to really remember who that guy is? You make a play every day,” Minter continued. “That kind of stands out, everybody starts talking about you whether it’s the veteran players, everybody that’s involved in this decision.

“I think he’s doing a great job, consistent, competitive, love where his head is at, love where he’s at,” Minter said. “Excited to see him play real football on Thursday.” — Jesse Minter via Chargers

Will Dissly shows why he should stick around

In the first half, Dissly got open in the red zone and caught a touchdown with Trey Lance throwing on the move. It was a catch Dissly is expected to make, but he needs to make those plays in the preseason after his struggles to finish last season. Dissly had multiple drops in the team’s playoff loss to the Houston Texans.

Los Angeles also brought in more competition for Dissly in the form of veteran TE Tyler Conklin and rookie Oronde Gadsden. Both have had bright moments during training camp, and the hype for Gadsden, in particular, has been notable around the fan base and social media. Disney’s strong play against Detroit may help him remain a weekly piece to the passing game for the Bolts.
