Former Tennessee Vols linebacker Jalen Smith was included this week on the watch list for a prominent college football award.

Smith, who spent the first two seasons of his career at Tennessee before transferring to Mississippi State this past offseason, was named to the Butkus Award watchlist.

The Butkus Award is given annually to the top linebacker in the sport.

Smith saw limited action for the Volunteers as a true freshman 2023 before earning a bigger role in Tennessee’s defense in 2024.

The Georgia native totaled 34 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss for the Vols as a redshirt freshman last season. Smith was named to the All-SEC freshman team as a result of his solid season.

Smith will see his former Tennessee teammates in late September when the Volunteers visit Starkville.
