It’s not often that there are true freshmen who come in and make an immediate impact. The Oklahoma Sooners had a few last season, though, like defensive tackle Jayden Jackson, who became a starter to at the start of the season.

I’m not entirely sure how many, if any, there will be in 2025, as this roster is loaded with players with experience. But, there will be at least one player in 2025, who contributes as a true freshman. When he gets to see the field is the question at hand, because as soon as he does, it could be over with for the rest of the SEC.

He probably won’t play a ton, but I’m willing to bet that anytime he does see the field, everyone will start to see the flashes of Oklahoma’s potential carbon copy of the best player in the country.

Sooners freshman wide receiver Elijah Thomas can be GREAT

I’m pretty sure that we are all in agreeance that Jeremiah Smith, the Ohio State receiver, is the best player in college football? And, if it’s not him, it could be his teammate, safety Caleb Downs. Smith, though, is one of those freak athletes that only comes around every now and then. He was the best receiver in college football last season, as a freshman.

Now, Thomas won’t be that in year one, because he will have a hard time becoming WR1 on the team. So, that’s why I said Thomas can be a carbon copy of what Smith is, because he’s a copy of it, just not as good as the actual thing.

In 2026, Thomas will be the best wide receiver on the team. But right now, he is showing flashes of Smith. They have a very similar body type, where Smith is 6’3”, 220 pounds, and Thomas is a bit shorter and a bit lighter, but both have muscular frames with wide shoulders. Thomas has the build and speed to be elite in the SEC.

And, he has the hands, as we saw during fall camp. On Monday, the Sooners started practice with some one on one drills, and Thomas stole the show, again, this time with a very impressive one handed catch.

The Sooners have something here. He may not be as good as Smith, which is okay, but he certainly has some of the tools that remind you of him.
