Late Monday night, Rivals put out a story about former Detroit Lions quarterback Teddy Bridgewater deciding to leave Miami Northwestern and head back to the NFL. This comes just a few weeks after Bridgewater was suspended by the school for providing impermissible benefits. Bridgewater initially said he wasn’t going to leave, but now he’s deciding to come back to the NFL after all.
This, of course, is going to have Lions fans wondering if there’s a possibility that Bridgewater could be coming back to the Lions. Especially after both Kyle Allen and Hendon Hooker had such rough outings in the Hall of Fame game. That’s not going to happen as Bridgewater is expected to stay in Florida and sign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Just a few weeks ago, Dan Campbell was asked about Bridgewater after the suspension news came out, and whether or not he had been in contact with him lately.
“Teddy and I, we talk all the time – I mean, not all the time, but we communicate back and forth.” Campbell said. “I’ve known Teddy a long time, so yeah. That’s on a personal level. He’s somebody I’ve got a lot of respect for and so just as a human being I’m going to talk to Teddy. “
That doesn’t exactly scream that the Lions are in communication with him as a team or that Campbell is asking him to come back. It just sounds like they’re talking as friends. But it is notable that Campbell and Bridgewater are close and that they have a lot of respect for each other. I personally still see a spot on the coaching staff for him someday, but that’s about it.
Bringing him back is certainly an option the Lions could have gone with, but the likelihood of that happening never really felt great. The Lions are actively trying to see if they can get Hendon Hooker and Kyle Allen to work, and while last Thursday was rough, it’s hard to make a ruling based on one game and a couple of weeks of practice. If things are still bad in a couple of weeks, then you can see the Lions making a move.
