Ryan Day confirms great news for the Ohio State Buckeyes on the injury front about a player they just couldn’t lose
The Buckeyes couldn’t have received better news about the injury.
The Ohio State Buckeyes were hit with their first injury scare last week when fall camp opened — and it was a moment worth holding your breath over.
Ohio State doesn’t have a ton of proven depth on the interior of the defensive line, which is why the coaching staff searched for reinforcements in the spring transfer portal.
When Eddrick Houston went down with what appeared to be a leg injury, the scene didn’t look encouraging. Losing one of their projected starting defensive tackles would have been a major setback for the Buckeyes.
Ryan Day Gives Encouraging Update on Key Starter
Fortunately, the Buckeyes won’t be without Houston for long. Head coach Ryan Day revealed that the former five-star lineman is expected to return to full participation shortly.
“We think he’s going to be involved with the team drills here within the next 48 hours — if not tomorrow, then the day after — but had another good day today,” Day said Tuesday during his media availability. “So yeah, it’s good to see him moving around. He was limited today, but I think he’ll be ready for team drills pretty soon.”
Houston is set to start alongside Kayden McDonald at defensive tackle, playing the 3-technique role after adding over 20 pounds this offseason to reach 292 pounds. He played in 12 games as a true freshman last year, finishing with seven tackles.
With the departures of Tyleik Williams and Ty Hamilton to the NFL, along with edge rushers Jack Sawyer and J.T. Tuimoloau, new faces will be expected to step up and produce. Houston is firmly in that mix and has already shown flashes of his potential.
Ohio State is also planning to rotate in Will Smith Jr., who has impressed during the offseason. Jason Moore and Tywone Malone are among other names who will need to be ready to contribute this fall.
Avoiding a significant injury to Houston is the best news Ohio State could have hoped for at this point in camp. Now, attention shifts back to the Buckeyes’ quarterback competition.
