National award watch list gives Miami Hurricanes positional group an added kick of motivation going into the 2025 season
The Canes came up empty on a list where they should have had representation
The Miami Hurricanes’ ground game has taken a big step forward over the last two seasons after years of mediocrity. Although overshadowed to some degree by Cam Ward’s brilliance, Miami’s capable ground game was a big part of the team’s offensive explosion in 2024.
Even with a lot of talent now playing in the NFL, Miami’s rushing attack should still be poised for another notable season in 2025. However, that memo apparently didn’t make it to those with the Doak Walk Award, which is given annually to the nation’s top running back. The preseason watch list went out this week, and a number of ACC running backs were included. However, not a single Miami Hurricanes RB made the list.
Miami lost an important player from last year in Damien Martinez, who led the Hurricanes with 1002 rushing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns. However, the Hurricanes return their #2 and #3 running backs from last year in terms of production in Mark Fletcher, Jr. (607 rushing yards, 9 touchdowns) and Jordan Lyle (400 yards, 4 touchdowns).
The Hurricanes’ offensive line should again be a strength of the team this fall, with projected first round draft pick Francis Mauigoa leading the way. The holes should again be there, and both Fletcher and Lyle should give the Hurricanes a solid one-two punch at the top of the running back rotation. Fletcher is the more physical of the duo, while Lyle offers another gear that few runners do, which was on display against Wake Forest when he totaled 7 rushes for 115 yards and a touchdown.
Miami doesn’t need much motivation after the way their 2024 regular season unceremoniously ended at Syracuse in a 42-38 loss. But a little bit extra never hurts to have.
