Former NFL WR and legend gives Colts Adonai Mitchell a big shout out over social media ahead of what could be a breakout year
Colts WR Adonai Mitchell has caught the attention of a former NFL star WR ahead of his second season
The Indianapolis Colts are taking the field for their preseason opener tonight against the Baltimore Ravens. They have multiple young players they are excited to see if they can continue their strong start to training camp into a big performance in a live game setting.
One of those players is second-year WR Adonai Mitchell, who, after struggling in the first week of training camp, has been able to stack multiple great practices, with his most recent being a dominant outing during the team’s joint practice session with the Ravens on Tuesday. Highlights from the day led to a former NFL WR and legend sharing some high praise for the Colts WR ahead of what the team is hoping is a breakout season.
Former Bengals star WR Chad Johnson has high praise for Colts WR Adonai Mitchell

Former Cincinnati Bengals star WR Chad Johnson, also known to some as Chad Ochocinco, had a great 11-year career in the NFL. He was selected to six Pro Bowls, named an All-Pro, and finished with 766 receptions, 11,059 yards, and 67 touchdowns. So it seems safe to say, Johnson knows a thing or two about playing the WR position at a high level in the NFL.
Johnson shared that Mitchell “is so raw,” meaning he thinks Mitchell has tremendous talent. Mitchell is coming off a lackluster rookie season, during which he recorded only 23 receptions for 312 yards and zero touchdowns, despite appearing in all 17 of the Colts’ games. Despite these uninspiring numbers, the Colts coaching staff’s belief in Mitchell’s talent hasn’t wavered. Especially Colts legend and the team’s current WR coach Reggie Wayne, who has spoken on Mitchell’s talent level every chance he gets.
Mitchell has a lot of momentum right now, with no one on the Colts in practice or the Ravens in joint practice being able to defend him. During his rookie year, he flashed his ability to separate at an elite level. Some of his best films came against one of the best CBs in the NFL, in his two games against Derek Stingley Jr. of the Houston Texans. During his sophomore season, however, he needs to utilize his ability as a separator to become a more consistent weapon for the Colts’ offense. To do that, he will need to cut out the drops and mental mistakes that plagued his rookie season. It’s unknown how much time Mitchell will see in the preseason, but he needs to use every snap he gets to show his recent success in practice can translate to a live game setting. If he can do that, he could see his role in the team’s offense this season grow tremendously, which is precisely what the Colts are hoping for.
