Houston Texans safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson had to be carted off from practice on Thursday.

KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson reported that Gardner-Johnson was hurt tackling John Metchie III and appeared in “major pain,” unable to put any weight on his right leg. As a result, he was carted off, and the next step is an MRI.

Wilson added that the entire team gathered around Gardner-Johnson as he was being attended to by trainers.

Gardner-Johnson joined the Texans this offseason after being traded, coming off a Super Bowl victory with the Eagles. Last season, he finished with 59 total tackles, one forced fumble, six interceptions, and 12 passes defended in the regular season, along with an additional 14 tackles in the postseason. He was expected to be starting in Houston’s secondary.

Now the Texans will have to wait and find out the extent of Gardner-Johnson’s injury.
