Former Tennessee Vols wide receiver Jauan Jennings isn’t currently practicing with the San Francisco 49ers due to a calf injury.

Jennings, who would like a new contract with the 49ers, is in the final season of the two-year extension he signed last year.

According to 49ers general manager John Lynch, there’s no timetable for Jennings’ return to practice, which puts the former Vol’s availability for the start of the regular season in doubt.

“Jauan is working with our health and performance staff trying to get back out on the field,” said Lynch on Thursday during an appearance on KNBR. “Jauan [strained] his calf in the offseason. And calves can can kind of linger, unfortunately.

“He came out and practiced some and wasn’t feeling great. So we’ve kind of put him off to the side. But Jauan’s working hard, like he always does. And I don’t have any timetable, but we’ll see. We’re looking forward to getting JJ, as we call him, out there on the field. He’s such a big part of who we are and what we want to be. We’re eager to get him back, but won’t do it until he’s ready.”

There have been some folks who have questioned if Jennings is really hurt or if he’s using the injury as a negotiation tactic to get a new contract.

Lynch was asked about Jennings’ contract on Thursday during his appearance on KNBR.

“We keep that (contract) stuff behind the scenes,” said Lynch. “But Jauan is a big part of who we are, like I just said. I think if you watch him play, you can see why. I mean, when you’re blocking people and they end up in the Gatorade table, that’s a good thing for us. And he kind of embodies a lot of who we want to be. So we love having JJ around here.”

It’s understandable that Jennings wants a new contract. But I feel pretty confident that he wants to be on the field even more than he wants a new deal. So I definitely think the calf injury is 100 percent legitimate. I don’t think it’s something he’s using as a negotiation tactic.

Lynch is right that calf injuries can linger, which is why holding Jennings out of practice right now is absolutely the right move by the 49ers.
