The Cleveland Browns return to action tonight with their first preseason game of the 2025 campaign, taking on the Carolina Panthers.

All eyes will be on rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders, who will get the start for the Browns and could see significant playing time. The only other quarterback expected to play is Tyler Huntley, though even that isn’t a certainty.

With Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel nursing injuries and the team opting to keep Joe Flacco out of the preseason opener, this game presents a valuable evaluation opportunity for Sanders. The Browns drafted Sanders in April after he slipped to the fifth round—two rounds after they had already selected Gabriel. It’s now being reported that Cleveland has turned down multiple trade offers for one of the rookies.

Other NFL teams reportedly tried to trade for one of the Browns rookies

According to The Athletic’s Mike Silver, several teams expressed interest in acquiring former Oregon standout Dillon Gabriel.

“After trading up to take Sanders in the fifth round, the Browns rejected multiple trade offers for Gabriel, preferring to move forward with both rookies,” Silver reported.

Gabriel has had more opportunities with both the first- and second-team offenses than Sanders so far in training camp. The 5-foot-11, left-handed quarterback is known for his strong processing and strong football IQ, traits the Browns are said to be high on. Even after drafting Sanders, who they didn’t expect to fall that far, the team still wanted Gabriel in the mix.

Given the Browns’ longstanding quarterback issues, their approach of stacking young talent at the position could be a smart one.

Sanders has a nice opportunity tonight to take a big step forward in the competition for more reps during camp. It’s a chance to show what he can do in a game setting—an experience Gabriel has yet to have.
