Sometimes, two catches is all you need to stand out in a preseason game. That was the case for Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Traeshon Holden, the undrafted rookie that keeps showing up this summer.

Holden’s two catches were enough to lead the team in receiving yards with 42, most of which came on a 35-yard gain down the sideline. Joe Milton found Holden between the cornerback’s and safety’s zones versus a Cover 2 look, which coaches call “the hole shot.”

During head coach Brian Schottenheimer’s post-game press conference, it was clear Holden’s day was enough to make him rise on the depth chart.

“Every day he shows up, he really does,” Schottenheimer told reporters Saturday night. “He makes a play every day. We saw they were playing some cloud [coverage] to that side, some Cover 2, and Joe (Milton) made a beautiful throw into the hole shot.”

But Holden’s climb up the roster isn’t about one exhibition game. It’s rather the fact that he does it on a daily basis.

“Traeshon has done that every day in practice — literally every day there’s been one or two big plays,” Schottenheimer added. “When you do that, you get noticed, and when you do that, you get more opportunities. I’m proud of him, and you’ll see him moving up the depth chart.”

Holden is on the rise but can he make the Cowboys’ 53-man roster?

Schottenheimer’s words leave no doubt: Holden is on the rise. However, a roster spot is not a done deal.

NFL teams usually carry a maximum of six wide receivers, which is likely the highest the Cowboys would go at roster cuts at the end of the month. I consider the following players roster locks:

  1. CeeDee Lamb
  2. George Pickens
  3. Jalen Tolbert
  4. Jonathan Mingo
  5. KaVontae Turpin

That means Holden is battling Ryan Flournoy, Jalen Cropper, and others for that one final spot at the position, barring any injuries. The good news for the rookie? He’s got a handful more practices and two preseason games to continue to rise. He’s got the coaching staff’s curiosity. Can he get their attention?
