Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones still can’t believe his team landed former Tennessee Vols quarterback Joe Milton in a trade this past offseason.

The Cowboys traded a 2025 fifth round draft pick to the New England Patriots in early April for Milton and a 2025 seventh round pick.

Milton, who started his college career at Michigan before transferring to Tennessee ahead of the 2021 season, was selected in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft by the Patriots.

The former Vol started one game for the Patriots as a rookie, throwing for 241 yards and a touchdown in a 23–16 win over the Buffalo Bills in Week 18. He also rushed for a touchdown in the win.

“I really have to pinch myself that we got him after the last game that he had up there, starting there for New England,” said Jones to 105.3 The Fan in Dallas on Saturday. “I’m just excited that we had a chance to get him. And he hasn’t disappointed. He’s actually — we’re just more and more encouraged by what we’re seeing.”

Milton saw significant action on Saturday in the Cowboys’ 31-21 preseason loss to the Rams. The Florida native completed 17-of-29 passes for 143 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Milton also rushed for 22 yards.

Milton is expected to serve as the primary backup quarterback to Dak Prescott in 2025. And it sounds like Jerry Jones is hoping he could be the heir to Prescott in Dallas.
