LSU baseball legend starts his pro career in the perfect manner to prove his doubters wrong
Jared Jones is simply inevitable. Check out the latest on his pro career here.
Jared Jones is back to doing what he does. Simply put, he just cannot stop mashing baseballs and providing souvenirs for fans, regardless of what jersey he has on. The national champ is now trying to begin his route to the majors, and he took his first step in his first game.
Jared Jones homers in first pro game
The former LSU first baseman and key slugger got off to a hot start in his pro career. After slipping further than many anticipated in this year’s draft, he went 2-4 with a home run and a double to start his road to the MLB. Jones is in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization.
This performance won’t shock many Tigers fans. They saw Jones hit towering homers year after year while dawning the purple and gold. Jones was a massive key to success for LSU during his time with the Tigers and proved to be a leader off the diamond as well.
Jones’ slide in the draft never made too much sense. He didn’t hold much leverage, but his upside as a power hitter always outweighed where he ended up being selected. The Pirates selected Jones with their 9th‑round pick (No. 263 overall).
Jones has ranked as one of the best power hitters in the 2022 prep class and one of the top sluggers in the ’24 and ’25 college crops. He went undrafted as a Georgia high schooler and while sophomore-eligible last July because of concerns about his bat, athleticism and signability. After slugging 64 homers and winning two College World Series in three years at Louisiana State, he could land in the third or fourth round.
The 6-foot-4, 246-pound Jones has plenty of strength and leverage in his right-handed stroke, generating top-of-the-scale raw power and exit velocities. He’s doing a better job of understanding that he can hit the ball out of any park from foul pole to foul pole without selling out for home runs. Strikeouts always will be part of his game, but he’s employing the opposite field more often and doing more damage against breaking balls. — MLB.com
