Unless you have been living under a rock, you know that Notre Dame football is in the middle of a heated quarterback battle.

In one corner, we have redshirt freshman CJ Carr. He was once considered a borderline five-star recruit in the 2024 class, and many Fighting Irish fans have already set unrealistic expectations for the “golden child”. With his combination of arm talent, processing, while also being the grandson of former Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr, he is an easy signal caller to root for. He has been considered the favorite to win the job by the majority of the fan base.

In the other corner is redshirt sophomore Kenny Minchey, who is considered to be the wildcard of the competition. Originally a part of the 2023 recruiting class, Minchey has been brought along slowly during the last two seasons. Due to his odd journey to ending up with the Fighting Irish, it has caused Minchey to become a bit underappreciated. One thing is certain, however, head coach Marcus Freeman and his staff aren’t underappreciating Minchey.

As I have written about a lot recently, this is a competition that is a lot closer than people believe. Does Carr have a slight advantage? I think that’s fair to say, but I also wouldn’t be shocked if Minchey won out in the end. Both players are doing everything in their power to unseat the other, and become the main man behind center.

Pete Nakos, who is a college sports business and transfer portal report for On3, recently put out an intel piece on the latest around the Fighting Irish quarterback battle, among some others. Although not the deepest analysis of all time, Nakos is echoing a lot of similar information. Here is what Nakos wrote.

Notre Dame

+ When Steve Angeli transferred to Syracuse this spring, Notre Dame’s quarterback competition turned into a two-way battle between Kenny Mincheyand CJ Carr. One source told On3 this past week that it is neck-and-neck with no clear separation. Minchey has the most experience in Mike Denbrock’s system, and that could prove to be a difference-maker when Marcus Freeman makes a decision.

This is a huge decision for Coach Freeman, offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock, and quarterbacks coach Gino Guidugli, and they need to get this one right. Notre Dame has championship aspirations in 2025, and obviously the quarterback is going to have the potential to put them over the top. There is an argument that either Carr or Minchey could potentially take this team the distance, but that remains to be seen.

Regardless, the next week is going to be huge for Notre Dame to determine how everything shakes out. We are heading down the home stretch for the staff to finalize a decision.
