Packers add former highly-touted prospect familiar with offensive system in move to boost depth before regular season
Green Bay signed Tyrion Davis-Price
The Green Bay Packers have made another roster move to improve depth throughout training camp. After working him out on Monday, the team signed running back Tyrion Davis-Price to the 90-man roster on Tuesday. The news was first reported by Jordan Schultz. As a corresponding move, the Packers waived/injured undrafted rookie Jalen White.
The Packers have handled injuries at the position for the last few weeks. Emanuel Wilson and MarShawn Lloyd have missed time, and while they are returning this week, Israel Abanikanda is now with a hamstring issue.
“With Emanuel Wilson and Chris Brooks, we’ve got two established players who have proven their abilities in this league,” general manager Brian Gutekunst said on Tuesday. “We certainly want to get MarShawn out there. Hopefully, this week we’ll get him out there. That’d be nice to see what he can add to the group. I like the competition there. They have a diverse skill set between all four of them. I’m very comfortable with that group. I’d like to get some of them back out there. Obviously, Emanuel has missed some time and MarShawn too, but it’d be good to get those guys back out there.”
Why the Packers signed Tyrion Davis-Price
Davis-Price is a powerful 6-1, 219-pound running back. He was a third-round pick from the San Francisco 49ers in 2022. After two years with the Niners, he spent the 2024 season with the Philadelphia Eagles and was a part of the Super Bowl roster as a member of the practice squad. Earlier this year, Davis-Price spent around six weeks on the Tennessee Titans, but was released right before training camp.
The running back has never had many opportunities on the field. Throughout three seasons, he’s had 53 offensive snaps and 43 rushing attempts. The back has had 2.81 yards after contact per attempt, and an impressive 27.6% breakaway rate. Davis-Price doesn’t add much as a receiver, with only two targets and no receptions in his NFL career.
For the Packers, it’s a valuable addition because Davis-Price has familiarity with the offense system, having spent a significant part of his career with Kyle Shanahan.
The Packers have seven running backs on the roster. Josh Jacobs is the unquestioned starter, while Emanuel Wilson, Chris Brooks, and MarShawn Lloyd are the backups likely to make the 53-man roster.
The options fighting at the bottom of the roster include another former 49ers back, recently-added Israel Abanikanda, plus undrafted rookie Amar Johnson, who scored a touchdown against the Jets.
