The Tennessee Vols are looking to pull off a major upset on the recruiting trail, but On3’s Greg Smith is skeptical it’ll actually happen.

Tennessee is one of several programs in pursuit of 2027 four-star edge rusher Reinaldo Perez.

Perez, 6-foot-5/245 lbs from Columbus, OH, is rated in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 5 player in the state of Ohio and the No. 22 defensive lineman in the nation.

Florida, USC, Michigan State, Purdue, Louisville, and Syracuse, among others, are also in the mix for Perez.

It’s Tennessee, though, that looms as the biggest threat to the Buckeyes in this battle.

Smith, however, noted for On3 this week that Ohio State is going to be tough to beat out for Perez.

“Tennessee is a threat and he does have a visit set to see the Vols in the fall. But it’s pretty hard to imagine anyone beating out Ohio State here,” wrote Smith.

There’s still a long way to go in this recruiting battle, and things can certainly change, but it sounds like it’s going to be tough for the Vols to land Perez over the Buckeyes.

But Tennessee is taking a shot here. We’ll see if the Volunteers make any progress over the next several months. You never say never in recruiting these days…
