The Texas Longhorns received a huge commitment back in April from 2027 Tustin (Calif.) High School EDGE Taven Epps, one of the top overall players from the state of California. With coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas program being in such a fertile area of talent, keeping those top athletes at home is incredibly important. They also must tap into other great areas that produce talent, which made getting Epps out of California so significant.

Despite that early commitment, Epps has not fully shut down his recruitment, at least that’s what it seems. In a report from Rivals national recruiting analyst Adam Gorney, he gave the latest on Epps, who is eyeing several game visits this fall. While it hasn’t been solidified yet, Epps will be checking out Notre Dame for the first time.

Other schools outside of the Fighting Irish that have Epps’ attention include Georgia, Oklahoma, and North Carolina. He will travel to Athens for the Bulldogs’ matchup against Alabama in late September. Epps will also be heading down to Chapel Hill when the Tar Heels welcome the Clemson Tigers and Oklahoma for their game against Ole Miss on Oct. 25.

This will be a massive battle for Epps, but Notre Dame at least has his attention early on. If Epps makes the visit, and they impress, it’ll be interesting to see how things heat up down the stretch.

Epps is considered to be a near top-100 recruit on the 247 Sports Composite ranking, currently pegged as the No. 104 overall player, No. 7 linebacker, and No. 11 player from the state of California in the 2027 recruiting class. The individual 247 Sports ranking is even higher on Epps, rating him as the No. 85 overall player and No. 5 linebacker in the class.

At 6-4 and 235 pounds, Epps has an outstanding frame to eventually develop into a full-time defensive end. As a sophomore for Tustin, Epps recorded 38 total tackles, nine tackles for loss, and seven sacks in 10 games. Epps also recorded another 11 quarterback hurries, one interception, six pass breakups, and a blocked punt.

Despite Epps being committed to the Longhorns, a long list of impressive suitors has continued to pursue him. Some of his top offers include the Fighting Irish, Texas, Georgia, Ohio State, Alabama, Michigan, Oregon, Tennessee, Oklahoma, USC, Texas A&M, Miami, Penn State, Nebraska, Missouri, Washington, Utah, TCU, SMU, Arizona State, Michigan State, UNC, Colorado, Maryland, Boston College, Arizona, Kansas, and Cal among others.
