What to look for: Running back battle heating up and more
- Running backs battle trending to see more characters: Last week, veteran newcomer Miles Sanders and fifth-round rookie Jaydon Blue missed the preseason opener due to injuries. That opened the door for seventh-round rookie Phil Mafah to standout and emergency signing Malik Davis to lead the team with 63 rushing yards, averaging nine per attempt. Now, Sanders and Blue have a chance at playing in Week 2. We’ll see what they have to say.
- Joe Milton is looking to settle down: The second-year quarterback struggled in his Cowboys debut last Saturday, overthrowing multiple receivers and having an overall off day in terms of accuracy. But he calmed down in the fourth quarter and led a touchdown drive displaying touch. Can he build on that or will it be more of the same?
- Tyler Booker’s debut: Brian Schottenheimer surprised the NFL world by sitting his first-round rookie last weekend. However, he’s alluded to that changing this weekend. The right guard is looking to fill the void Zack Martin’s retirement left on the Cowboys offensive line.
- Undrafted rookies on the rise: Schottenheimer himself said WR Traeshon Holden is climbing the depth chart so he’s likely to play more snaps this weekend after leading the Cowboys with 42 receiving yards versus the Los Angeles Rams. But watch out for CB Zion Childress, as well. He had a strong performance playing in the slot and could be competing for more than a 53-man roster spot. He could even start Week 1.
