Despite winning the national championship, Ohio State and head coach Ryan Day have lost to the Michigan Wolverines four straight times. Once again, the first goal this season is to get over that hump.

The rivalry remains as fierce as ever, despite what some might say. Players continue to carry that intensity with them into the NFL, and it shows year after year.

Former Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy had success against the Buckeyes during his two seasons as the Wolverines’ starter. Now, he’s teamed up with former Buckeye left guard Donovan Jackson. Recently, Jackson delivered a highlight-reel play with multiple pancake blocks, which prompted McCarthy to take a jab at Ohio State.

“I absolutely love it,” McCarthy said. “Us Michigan guys, we get a little skeptical of the mentality and the tough guy-ness of Ohio State, but he absolutely proved it. It was a sight to see, and I just love how fired up he got after that. He’s gonna be a great player.”

While McCarthy made sure to give his new Vikings teammate credit, he still slipped in a shot at the toughness of Ohio State football—something that surely won’t sit well with Buckeye fans.

Simply put, the only way for Ohio State to silence that kind of talk is to get back to beating Michigan. The one blemish on Day’s otherwise stellar career has been his performance against the Wolverines. Last season, Ohio State lost to a mediocre Michigan team, managing just 10 points in a three-point defeat. The Buckeyes redeemed themselves with a historic postseason run, but beating Michigan would have made it even sweeter.

McCarthy, meanwhile, is preparing for his first NFL season as a starter after missing all of last year with an injury. Even at the professional level, it’s clear that the Buckeyes are still on the former Wolverine’s mind.
