The Kansas City Chiefs’ quest to figure out their cornerback group isn’t getting any easier during preseason Week 2 against the Seattle Seahawks, thanks to some untimely injury luck.

By the midway mark of the third quarter, the Chiefs had ruled out three players due to injury. Late in the second half, both LB Jack Cochrane and CB Nazeeh Johnson left the game. Cochrane is dealing with a knee injury, while Johnson is dealing with a shoulder injury.

Johnson’s injury came after he had a tremendous red zone pass breakup that stopped the Seattle Seahawks from adding to their lead.

Johnson has regularly been a member of the starting defense opposite Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson. He’s had his ups and downs dating back to a season-ending knee injury in the 2023 NFL season, but he’s finally starting to look recovered from that.

Johnson wasn’t the only injury in the cornerback room during preseason Week 2, though. In the third quarter, Chiefs rookie CB Nohl Williams, who has been a preseason standout, also exited the game with a head injury. The team reported that he’s also in the league’s concussion protocol.

But wait, there’s more.

Jaylen Watson is also dealing with a concussion suffered during preseason Week 1 against the Arizona Cardinals. The Chiefs are also without CB Kristian Fulton (knee), who is working his way back after starting training camp on the Active/PUP list. With Watson, Fulton, Johnson, and Williams now injured, the Chiefs’ cornerback depth is reaching a dangerous point with Week 1 against the Los Angeles Chargers just 21 days away.

If the team had to play a regular-season game tomorrow, the starters would likely be Trent McDuffie, Joshua Williams, and Melvin Smith based on the depth chart.

Oh, hey, veteran S Mike Edwards was also ruled out with a hamstring injury.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid provides postgame injury updates on six players after preseason Week 2 loss to Seahawks.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid confirmed the four aforementioned injuries after the game. He also confirmed an injury for DE Felix Anudike-Uzomah.

“We’ll see how they turn out,” Reid said of the injuries. “Jack Cochrane, knee. Nazeeh (Johnson) had a shoulder. Again, we’ll have to see with the MRIs and things that go forward here. Nohl Williams had a concussion. Mike Edwards hamstring. Felix (Anudike-Uzomah) had a hamstring. Then Omarr (Norman-Lott) came out and went back in.”

MRIs for Cochrane and Johnson will determine the injury severity and whether either player will be available for preseason Week 3 or the regular season.
