The back injury for Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford has officially hit a point of concern that not even the coaching staff may have expected in recent weeks. There is no recent update that proves any serious setback has been the case for the veteran quarterback, but the constant unknown surrounding his status for the regular season continues to loom.

Stafford’s status remains cloudy after lack of practice

According to Gary Klein, a Rams official declined to comment on Stafford’s scheduled workout. That official revealed that head coach Sean McVay would address the situation on Monday.

This has been an ultra-confusing week for the Rams and their quarterback. At the start of the week, there was an expectation that Stafford would return to practice. That did not occur. Stafford also did not practice during a joint session with the New Orleans Saints on Thursday.

Ahead of Saturday’s preseason game, McVay said that Stafford had another workout scheduled for Saturday. He was not going to play in the game, but he would, at the least, get that prep work in. Now, even that workout is up in the air.

This situation has turned into a waiting game for the Rams and their fans. Stafford had seemingly turned a corner last weekend when the feedback from last Saturday’s workout was positive.

McVay also shared that Stafford was able to get significant work in on Saturday despite not being active for the game. Saying Stafford “threw more than 60 passes” as well as sharing that “there were no limits to the type of throws he made.” QB 1 seems ready to go, and we will see on Monday if there’s any rust from missing the last couple of weeks. I, for one, am never going to doubt Stafford, who has shown time and time again that he is one of the toughest players in the NFL. — Destin Adams, A to Z Sports

Fast forward to a week later, and the suspense only grows. Getting Stafford back to practice would be a major first step toward him being available for Week 1. At this point, that concept only gets more clouded by each update (or lack thereof) for Stafford’s injury.
