The Indianapolis Colts were one of the most mentioned suitors for the NFL’s 2024 sack leader, Trey Hendrickson, throughout the offseason. At one point, the Cincinnati Bengals allowed the star pass rusher to seek a trade, but in reality, they never wanted to trade him away.

Because of this, trade talks stalled, and all signs pointed towards the Bengals and Hendrickson ultimately agreeing to a new deal to keep him in Cincinnati. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, though, the Bengals are now open to speaking to other teams about a potential trade yet again.

Colts still have interest in trading for the NFL’s 2024 sack leader

The Colts aggressively tried to reunite Hendrickson with his former defensive coordinator, Lou Anarumo, who is now the defensive coordinator in Indianapolis. So if he is truly available via trade, it would make sense for the Colts to reignite their interest. And according to NFL Insider Jordan Schultz, the Colts are one of three teams that have already shown interest in trading for Hendrickson.

From what I’ve gathered from multiple league sources, the Bengals never came close to pulling the trigger to trade Hendrickson away this offseason. But many believed that if he was going to be moved ahead of the NFL Draft, the Colts were the most likely destination. They were the best fit to acquire him on paper, and the Colts had real interest in getting the move across the finish line. It takes two to tango, though, and the Bengals were dragging their feet all offseason.

I remain skeptical that a trade gets done because the Bengals are still involved and would have to agree to trade him away. And they’ve shown multiple times this offseason that they would rather deal with the drama of not paying him than end this situation with a trade that is less than they believe his worth to be. I doubt any team is going to hand over a first-round pick so that they can then give the 30-year-old a contract near the top of the edge market. They didn’t receive that offer in the offseason, and they certainly wouldn’t get it now. For the Colts, I think they’d offer a player like Kwity Paye and a third-round pick, potentially with stipulations that could turn it into a second. Is that enough to finally end this saga? I’m not sure, but the Colts are interested, and if a trade does occur, I believe they should be considered one of the favorites to land him.
