Rams finally get the news that fans have been wishing for since the preseason began, but there’s a new reason they should worry
A rollercoaster offseason continues for a key veteran on the Rams offense.
The Los Angeles Rams got a mixture of positive and potentially negative news after practice on Monday. The latest Matthew Stafford updates are a mixed bag for fans of the team and the rest of the roster for LA.
Matthew Stafford returns to practice
Via reports and video from the team, the Rams quarterback is back on the practice field. Stafford practiced in full and took part in team drills.
This is a great step forward for Stafford who has missed a lot of time due to his back injury. The veteran quarterback was expected to return to practice last week, but that did not occur. Rather, he has attempted to get into a routine of scheduled throwing workouts. Finally, he’s back on the field with his teammates and coaching staff now, though.
Sean McVay won’t guarantee Week 1 for Stafford
The head coach was noncommittal when discussing Stafford’s status for the regular season opener. “I think that would be putting the cart way before the horse. I thought he did a good job today.” — McVay on his confidence for Stafford to play in Week 1
Clearly, there is a possibility he’s not ready for action to start the season. In that instance, one of Jimmy Garoppolo or Stetson Bennett would most likely get the start for Los Angeles. McVay also did mention that they are taking things day by day with Stafford. They won’t rush him, even if they remain hopeful he’s ready to start the season.
Ultimately, the Rams will play it smart with their veteran quarterback. McVay has never been the type to push a player back into playing coming off an injury, and your potential Pro Bowl quarterback won’t be an example of when to do that, either.
Rather, expect the Rams to monitor his practice levels and how he feels after these workouts to determine what the smartest route back to game action will be for Stafford.
