During a hilarious segment on HBO’s “Hard Knocks,” the Buffalo Bills recently acquired kicker Caden Davis beat out Josh Allen during an improv sketch that quickly took over the internet.

However, the moment was short-lived since the team parted ways with Davis on Tuesday. It’s a great sign that Tyler Bass will be available for the regular season, but it’s disappointing that we won’t get more gems from Davis in the HBO finale.

In subsequent moves, the Bills waived running back Jarveon Howard with an injury designation and added cornerback Zy Alexander, running back Elijah Young, and offensive lineman Rush Reimer.

Zy Alexander was a ball hawk at LSU

Buffalo scooped up Alexander after the defensive back was waived with a non-football injury designation on Monday by the Seattle Seahawks. His injury was undisclosed, but Buffalo felt good about where he was at and brought him onto the team. Alexander had zero snaps through two preseason games with the Seahawks.

Some injury red flags resulted in Alexander not having his name called during the 2025 NFL Draft. An ACL tear in 2023, followed by a concussion in 2024, had some teams concerned about his longevity. Despite recovering well, teams felt it was too much of a risk.

With bowl stats included during his final two seasons with LSU, Alexander played in 19 games with four interceptions, 11 passes defended, 51 solo tackles, and a sack to boot. He previously spent time at Southeastern Louisiana, where he appeared in 42 games and was named First-Team All-Southland Conference in 2021 and 2022 with All-America honors during his 2021 season as well.

Former Chiefs UDFA lands in Buffalo

After signing as an undrafted free agent, the crowded running back room was just too much to overcome, and the Kansas City Chiefs waived Elijah Young on Monday, which is how he arrived in Buffalo. Young only registered 15 snaps through the team’s two preseason games, with 11 in the passing game and four rushing attempts. He recorded one target with no receptions and four attempts on the ground with 15 total yards. He just didn’t prove himself enough on the field.

The undrafted running back amassed 1,705 yards and seven touchdowns on 371 career carries after spending his first three college seasons at Missouri before transferring to Western Kentucky. Adding to his repertoire, Young had 47 receptions for 384 yards and a pair of touchdowns. After the 2024 season, he was named to Phil Steele’s Postseason CUSA All-Conference Second Team honors.

He has his work cut out for him after leaving a team because of a crowded running back room and joining another with the same situation. Buffalo has James Cook, Ray Davis, Ty Johnson, and Frank Gore Jr. to compete with Young, who will have to learn the offense quickly and show the team what he can accomplish in the preseason finale against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

He’s back: Reimer returns to Buffalo

If you thought, “That name looks familiar,” you’d be correct. Reimer originally signed with Buffalo as an undrafted free agent following this past draft and was waived in early August. On Tuesday, it was announced that he’d be back with the team. However, like Alexander, Reimer hasn’t registered a single preseason snap since he left the team before their first game and arrived before their third. Expect to see a little bit of Reimer in the preseason finale.

Much like his counterparts, Reimer split his college career after transferring. He started playing for Montana State before transferring to Cal. In 2022, he was named second-team All-Big Sky on top of being a third-team FCS All-American. He followed that up in 2023 by being named a first-team All-Big Sky selection before transferring.

Finding key depth and figuring out the intricate puzzle that is assembling an NFL roster is no small feat. While they have their work cut out for them, the team will do everything in its power to give these guys a chance. After an ugly blowout loss to the Chicago Bears in preseason Week 2, paired with the team’s current injuries, it wasn’t shocking to see them bring in some more depth.
