It’s a little early to be taking mock drafts seriously, but seeing them in August is a good barometer of what prospects to keep an eye on over the course of the college football season.

When it comes to the Minnesota Vikings, there is one position of major need: cornerback. It’s a very interesting cornerback class at the top, and they are lucky that the top defensive back prospect is Ohio State Buckeyes safety Caleb Downs.

Vikings select CB Keith Abney in 2026 NFL Mock Draft

In the first mock draft of the 2026 NFL Draft cycle, we at A to Z Sports got together and the Vikings ended up selecting a cornerback out of Arizona State in Keith Abney.

When you look at the Vikings roster, there isn’t much to be concerned about. The biggest is at the cornerback position. They have Byron Murphy Jr., but question marks after him throughout the depth chart. After focusing on the trenches the last two off-seasons, now is the time to attack the secondary. Abney is a sticky man coverage cornerback with good instincts who can learn and develop very well in Brian Flores’ defense.

Abney hasn’t gotten a lot of attention in this class so far, but there is a ton to like about him. He can do a little bit of everything when it comes to playing the position, including flipping his hips in transition.

The last two offseasons have been focused on fixing the trenches, and it appears to have worked. The offensive line is reportedly fixed after completely overhauling the interior of the room. Along with that, the defensive line is significantly improved after a bunch of moves, including adding Jonathan Allen and Javon Hargrave.

With the trenches in a more comfortable spot, now the Vikings can start to prioritize the cornerback room, which has been on the back burner until now.
