Tennessee Vols athletic director Danny White dropped a quote earlier this month that should have UT football fans fired up.
If Vols fans needed any proof that White is “one of them”, his recent quote to VolQuest about why he’s been more vocal lately should do the trick.
“I don’t do the best job of it,” said White when asked how he handles some the frustration of modern day college sports. “Sometimes it’s been difficult. I say a bunch. Sometimes I put the Tennessee hat [on] and just say, ‘you know what, F it. Nobody is listening. We’re just going to look for every competitive advantage as possible.’
“And I need to do that. I owe it to our student athletes, our coaches, our fan base to make sure I’m doing that because I think in some ways, less regulation is an advantage for us because of our resource base powered through our fan base.”
I don’t think there’s any doubt that White attacks his job with a competitor’s mindset. And you can certainly sense his competitiveness in his interview with VolQuest (check out the entire interview here).
Not every decision White makes is going to be popular with Vols fans — such as the recent news that season ticket prices will increase by an average of four percent in 2026 — but I think it’s clear the veteran athletic director is constantly working to gain an advantage for Tennessee athletics.
