Kellen Moore and the New Orleans Saints may care more about this final week of preseason action than any other team around the NFL. New Orleans is still locked into a QB competition with no clear winner as of yet. Spencer Rattler and Tyler Shough won’t have to wait long to learn their fates following the team’s final preseason game vs. the Denver Broncos, though.

Saints won’t wait to name starting QB

According to Kellen Moore, New Orleans won’t wait until the last minute to name their starting QB. The team won’t hide it ahead of Week 1.

Rather, they’ll see what happens in this final preseason game against Denver and make their choice. This will give the team time to prepare before Week 1 begins with a clear starter in place. Reps with the first-team unit can increase for whoever that is between Shough and Rattler.

This is a good call by Moore and his staff. There can be an ambiguity around the roster if you wait, even if some coaches would believe it gives them an upper hand in Week 1 because their opponent must prepare for both potential options.

For the Saints, they are looking at this from a long-term perspective and trying their best to make sure the winner of the job is best prepared to succeed to start the season. Getting as much practice in with the players who will be around them for the game that count is vital.

Shough and Rattler both will play in preseason finale

Moore also announced that both Tyler Shough and Spencer Rattler will play in the preseason finale. Jake Haener did not play in last week’s preseason game, so it would not surprise me if we do not see him again in this one.

With a competition revving up and seemingly only two options left in the race, there’s really no reason to take plays away from either Shough or Rattler in favor of Haener. The longest-tenured QB still has a chance to make the active roster – since the NFL implemented their third QB inactive rule for game days.

Regardless, Moore is one step closer to revealing who his starter will be for Week 1. He’s not going to beat around the bush. Instead, New Orleans will make the call sooner than later and get ready for Moore’s first action as an NFL head coach.
