Tennessee Vols head coach Tony Vitello said this week that an iconic moment from the 2025 season was the loudest that he’s ever heard in a college baseball game.

Vitello joined WNML on Thursday and pointed out LHP Liam Doyle pitching out of the bullpen against Wake Forest in the Knoxville Regional as the loudest college baseball moment he’s experienced.

“As a college baseball coach, maybe I’m prejudiced, but the loudest I’ve ever heard a college crowd was when Liam Doyle came out of the bullpen (against Wake Forest),” said Vitello. “It was kind of a building effect, but when everyone knew it was that guy, that noise is the loudest I’ve ever heard.”

When Doyle came out of the bullpen to pitch against Wake Forest, it was probably the closest thing any of us have seen to the scene in Major League when Ricky “Wild Thing” Vaughn comes out of the bullpen.

Dolye, who was selected by the St Louis Cardinals with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2025 MLB Draft, threw 104 pitches in a win against Miami (OH) on Friday night before throwing 2.1 shutout innings to finish off the win against Wake Forest on Monday.

It wasn’t the biggest win in recent Tennessee baseball history, but it easily one of the most gutsy performances we’ve ever seen from a Vols player — which is why the crowd at Lindsey Nelson absolutely erupted when Doyle came into the game.
